Idol Worship Examined

in listening to mark driscoll's sermon series entitled "doctrine: what christians should believe" i heard some cool stuff in sermon 11 on worship that i thought sharing on a blog would be appropriate.

main theme: we are all made to worship. we either worship the creator, or the creation.

here is mark's list of questions made to force you to dig up your own idols. i would post my answers, but i think God and i should discuss those first. i post these so that you can answer them on your own.

Discovering our Idols:
EXTERNAL:
Who/What is the lord that rules over your life?
Who is the judge you are seeking approval from?
Where do you give your first fruits?
What do you plan/pray for?

INTERNAL:
What false beliefs do you hold about God?
What Scriptures do you deeply doubt or disbelieve?
Who/What do you treasure/long for the most?

MEDIATION:
Who/What mediates between you and God?
Who/What other than Jesus do you use to get close to God?
Who/What if taken from your life would cause you not to walk faithfully with God?

HEAVEN:
Where is your functional heaven?
When daydreaming about escaping this life, what does your functional heaven look like and how is it different from real heaven?
On earth, where do you run for your safety or comfort as your hiding place?

SAVIOR:
Who/What is your functional savior?
What good thing has become a God thing? (overelevating something)
What things, instead of being a means of worship, are objects of worship?
What idols am I selling to others?

these were difficult, but i hope they bring you closer to God. for the whole sermon visit this link.
